10.3 Topical NSAIDs

  • Topical NSAIDs may be considered as additional pain relief for people with knee or hand osteoarthritis. Topical NSAIDs should be considered before oral NSAIDs and the most economical preparation should be chosen. Rubefacients are not recommended for the treatment of osteoarthritis.
  • Ibuprofen gel 5% may be suitable for musculoskeletal pain in the elderly. It may be prescribed by specialists only in line with the inpatient analgesic strategy for severe or distressing acute musculoskeletal pain in patients aged >65 years old.
